Class 8 Physical Education Khel Yatra Unit 1 PDF: Foundations of Physical Education and Well-being

Class 8 Physical Education (Khel Yatra) Unit 1, Foundations of Physical Education and Well-being, connects movement and traditional games with physics (balance, force, projectile motion, gravity) and biology (muscles, bones, respiration and circulation).

What Class 8 Physical Education Unit 1 Covers

How the unit is built: every activity has the same four parts: a warm-up, the main game, a cool-down, and a circle-time talk that links the game to a topic from science, values or health.

Team and traditional games: Horse Vault Race pairs students of similar height and weight, one crouched as the ‘horse’ with chin tucked to chest. Progressive Mass Drill is a set of freehand movements done in sync on a count of eight from a demonstrator on a raised platform.

Games about bullying and harassment: Baraf Pānī casts students as the bully, the target, bystanders and the upstander, the bystander who chooses to act. Chār Tālī, played between teams standing 20 m apart with whistle signals, builds alertness and shows the part society plays in stopping harassment.

Science through movement: Conduction Relay shows heat passing between bodies and objects. Motion-in-Action Relay has stations for linear motion (sprinting), rotational motion (spinning three times around a cone) and projectile motion (throwing), with time and distance recorded in SI units. Breathing in Action measures breathing and pulse rate after low-, medium- and high-intensity zones.

The body at work: Flex and React shows how the brain and muscles work together (neuromuscular control). Move Like a Machine runs stations for flexion and extension (bicep curls) and jumping and landing (squat jumps). Adapt and Achieve shows how bones and muscles adapt to strength, endurance and flexibility training.

Exercises in Unit 1

  • Self-Assessment, Assessment by Teacher and Reflection & Progress checklists at the end of the unit.

FAQ

What is an upstander?
A bystander who chooses to take action against bullying; the Baraf Pānī game in Khel Yatra Unit 1 teaches this role.

Which types of motion does the Motion-in-Action Relay show?
Linear motion (running), rotational motion (spinning around a cone) and projectile motion (throwing), measured in SI units.
