What Kriti Class 8 Chapter 7 Covers
The sapta-tāla alaṅkāras: Carnatic music has seven main tālas: Dhruva, Maṭhya, Rūpaka, Jhampa, Triputa, Aṭa and Eka. Each is built from three parts: laghu (clap and finger counts, I), drutam (clap and wave, O) and anudrutam (one beat, U). Grade 8 completes the set with Miśhra Jāti Jhampa (7 + 1 + 2 = 10 beats), Tiśhra Jāti Triputa (3 + 2 + 2 = 7), Khaṇḍa Jāti Aṭa (5 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 14) and Chatuśhra Jāti Eka (4).
A kriti: ‘Sri Gaṇanāthaṁ Bhajare’ by Muthuswami Dikshitar in rāga Īśhamanohari and Rūpaka tāla, which shows the three parts of a kriti (pallavi, anupallavi, charaṇam) plus a madhyama kāla passage.
Rāg Asāvarī: from Asāvarī thāṭ, with komal gandhār, dhaivat and nishād; dhaivat is the vādi and gandhār the samvādi. Gandhār and nishād are left out of the ascent, which makes it auḍav–sampūrṇa, and it is sung in the second quarter of the day. It is taught through a lakṣhaṇ gīt in Teentāl and a sargam gīt in Jhaptāl.
Bhakti and Sufi music: Tulsidas’s bhajan ‘Ṭhumak Chalat Rāmachandra’ and the qawwali ‘Duma Dum Mast Kalandar’. The activities ask you to accompany a piece on an instrument you know and to sing it at different tempos to feel the mood change.
