“Daddy’s Enduring Script” is an autobiographical memoir written by Amara Bavani Dev. She reflects on her childhood memories of her father, Nagarcoil K. Padmanabhan. Her father held a comfortable, well-paying job as a Malayalam newsreader at All India Radio (AIR) in Trivandrum. However, driven by a deep passion for writing, he suddenly resigned from AIR to pursue freelance story writing for Tamil magazines and scripts for South Indian films in Chennai.
Despite financial hardships and unpredictable income, the family lived happily in a rented modest house. Famous film stars like Gemini Ganesan and comedian Nagesh visited their house. Her father was a deeply caring parent who encouraged his children, Amara and her sister Anuradha, to read literature and study at Holy Angels’ Convent, an exclusive school in Chennai.
Just as a major lucrative film deal for a Telugu movie seemed poised to change their financial fortunes, tragedy struck. On the morning of her school picnic, her 41-year-old father passed away in his sleep due to coronary thrombosis. The family moved to Bangalore, where her mother returned to teaching to support them. Although her father passed away early, his passion for writing lived on as a guiding light. The movie he scripted, Nindu Hrudayalu starring N.T. Rama Rao, became a blockbuster. Amara completed one of his unfinished film scripts, and both sisters later achieved recognition as accomplished writers, winning prizes in prestigious international competitions like the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.
