एक कहानी यह भी में लेखिका ने बताया है कि उनका जन्म मध्यप्रदेश के भानुपरा गाँव में हुआ था और जब वे कुछ जानने-समझने लायक हुई तो स्वयं को अजमेर के ब्रह्मपुरी मोहल्ले के दो मंजिला मकान में पाया। मकान के ऊपरी हिस्से में पिताजी लिखने-पढ़ने का काम करते रहते थे और नीचे परिवार के शेष सभी सदस्य रहते थे। उनकी माँ अनपढ़ थीं लेकिन घर की जिम्मेदारियों को बहुत अच्छी तरह से निभाती थीं। अजमेर आने से पहले लेखिका के पिता इंदौर में प्रतिष्ठित और सम्मानित व्यक्ति के रूप में कांग्रेस और समाज-सुधार के कार्यों में जुटे हुए थे। वे न केवल शिक्षा का उपदेश देते थे बल्कि विद्यार्थियों को घर बुलाकर पढ़ाते भी थे। लेखिका के पिताजी का जीवन उन दिनों खुशहाल था। वे कोमल और संवेदनशील व्यक्ति होने के साथ-साथ अहंवादी एवं क्रोधी भी थे।
