HOW TO CHANGE DIRECT INTO INDIRECT WHEN THERE IS QUESTION WHICH START FROM ” WHO” OR WH FAMILY
Rules
- Change ‘Said to’ into asked, questioned, inquired or interrogated.
- Question Mark (?) should be changed into full stop
- The sentences will not be in interrogative form in Indirect Speech. This means that helping verb is used after the subject.
- Tense and pronoun shall be changed according to the rules.
- If the question can be answered in yes/no, conjunction if / whether will be used. If the question is of ‘wh family’ no conjunction will be used.
Example He said to me ” When are you coming? (Questions is of Wh family)
He asked me when I was coming.
Direct And Indirect Questions In English: Examples
Direct: Where is Market Street?
Indirect: Could you tell me where Market Street is?
In indirect questions with is/are, the verb (is) comes after the subject (Market Street).
Direct: How has he managed to get in shape so quickly?
Indirect: Do you have any idea how he’s managed to get in shape so quickly?
The auxiliary verbs have and has can be used in both the direct and indirect questions – but in the direct question, “has” comes before the subject (he), and in the indirect question, “has” comes after the subject.
Direct: He said to me ,”When will the train arrive ?”
Indirect: He enquired of me when the train would arrive.
