Bilingual Summary & Word Meanings

The story “Patriotism” by Ramendra Kumar centers on a grandfather (Nanaji) who teaches his grandchildren, Naina and Ajit, the true meaning of patriotism. Patriotism is not limited to dying on a battlefield or going to jail like great freedom fighters; it can be shown through small daily actions such as respecting the national anthem, language, flag, and loving fellow citizens.

To illustrate this, Nanaji takes the children to a small village named Himapet, 100 kilometers away. There, under a peepal tree, he tells them about Dr. Akash Rai. After completing his MBBS in India, Akash went to the USA on a scholarship for higher studies. While his friends settled in America for money and luxury, Akash returned to India to repay the debt of his country’s education and serve its people.

When a dangerous epidemic broke out in nearby villages, Akash went to serve the sick villagers without informing his parents. He worked tirelessly to save lives but contracted the disease himself and passed away. The grateful villagers raised funds and built the “Akash Memorial Hospital” in his honor. Nanaji reveals that Akash was his own son, proving that true service to humanity is the real essence of patriotism.
