Class 7 Maths Part 1 Chapter 8, Working with Fractions, develops visual and conceptual mastery of multiplying and dividing fractions—using rectangular area models, simplifying before multiplying, reciprocals, Brahmagupta’s historical laws, and multi-step fraction word problems.
What Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 8 Covers
8.1 Multiplication of Fractions models multiplying a fraction by a whole number and multiplying two fractions (a/b × c/d = a × c / b × d) via the area of a 1 × 1 unit square, cancels common factors to lowest form, and explains when a product is smaller or larger than the factors.
8.2–8.3 Division of Fractions & Historical Problems derives fraction division as multiplication by the reciprocal (a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c) as stated by Brahmagupta and Bhaskaracharya, and solves real-world and classical Sanskrit problems (‘A Dramma-tic Donation’ from Lilavati).

FAQ
How do you multiply two fractions and how do you divide one fraction by another?
To multiply two fractions, multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together: a/b × c/d = a × c / b × d. To divide by a fraction, multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.
Is the product of two numbers always greater than both numbers?
No. When you multiply a positive number by a proper fraction (between 0 and 1), the product is smaller than the original number; when both fractions are between 0 and 1, their product is smaller than both fractions.
