How I Taught My Grandmother to Read is set in a village in north Karnataka. When the narrator goes away to a wedding and the next episode arrives, her grandmother cannot read it. At sixty-two she decides to learn the Kannada alphabet from her granddaughter, with Saraswati Puja during Dassara as her deadline for reading a novel on her own.
