What Changed in NCERT Class 9 Books This Year

These books are the first edition, printed in June 2026, and they follow the National Curriculum Framework 2023. They are not a light revision of the old ones. The chapter order is new, many topics have moved, and notes or guides written for the old Class 9 English and Maths books will not match. The Social Science book is also printed as Part 1, so its nine chapters cover only the first part of the course.

A few changes stand out once you open them. Maths starts with coordinate geometry and ends with sequences and progressions, a topic that used to wait until Class 10. Science now opens with a short chapter on how secondary science works before moving to cells, motion and atoms. Social Science is one book that mixes geography, history, political science and economics, instead of four separate books. Arts, Physical Education and Skill Education now have their own Class 9 textbooks too.

NCERT Class 9 English Book PDF

The Class 9 English book has eight units (NCERT calls the book Kaveri). Each unit pairs a prose lesson with a poem or a shorter piece on the same theme, so Unit 1 sets Sudha Murty’s How I Taught My Grandmother to Read beside the poem Bharat Our Land. The questions lean on discussion and writing rather than one-line answers. Later units follow the same pattern: Vitamin-M sits beside I Cannot Remember My Mother, and the book closes with Follow That Dream and Believe in Yourself.

How to Study the New Class 9 NCERT Books

  • Throw out old notes first. Anything made for the old Class 9 English, Hindi or Maths books follows a different syllabus. Start fresh notebooks for these subjects.
  • Do the maths in the book before any guide. The new Maths book explains each idea through worked problems. Solve them yourself before looking at the method; that is where the understanding comes from.
  • Split long science chapters. Chapters such as Cell and Journey Inside the Atom run past twenty pages. Read half, draw the diagrams, then come back for the second half the next day.
  • Keep a map file for Social Science. The geography chapters on landforms and climate use a lot of maps. Mark them in an atlas as you read; it makes revision much quicker.
  • Read the English units aloud. Each unit’s prose and poem share a theme. Reading both before class makes the discussion questions at the end of the unit much easier to answer.
