Ans 7. (b) Aryabhatta.

D. Answer the following questions in brief.

1. Name the hottest planet in our solar system. Is it closest to the Sun?

Ans 1. Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. It is not the closest planet to the sun.

2. How much time does the earth take to

(a) revolve around the sun?

Ans 2(a). About 365 days

(b) to complete one rotation about its own axis?

Ans 2(b). 24 hours

3. State the nature of the shape of orbit of planets.

Ans 3. The shape of orbit of planets is elliptical.

4. Write the meaning of the term ‘Artificial Satellites’.

Ans 4. Man-made satellites are called artificial satellites.

E. Answer the following questions.

1. How is the sun useful to us?

Ans 1. The sun is the main source of energy for the earth. Plants need sunlight to make food. All animals directly or indirectly take food from plants. Thus, all living beings take energy from the sun. Thus, sun is necessary to sustain life on the earth.

2. Name the terrestrial planets. Why are they so called?

Ans 2. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the terrestrial planets. These planets are mainly made up of rocks and metals and hence are called terrestrial planets.

3. State the conditions necessary for existence of life on a planet.

Ans 3. Following are the necessary conditions for existence of life on a planet:

• Presence of atmosphere.

• Presence of liquid water on its surface.

• Right size and right distance from the sun; making it neither too hot nor too cold.

4. Why do we observe phases of moon?

Ans 4. Only one face of moon is visible from the earth because it takes the same number of days to complete one rotation and one revolution. Due to this, we get to see different shapes of moon on different days of the month. These shapes are called the phases of the moon.

5. State two uses to which artificial satellites are being put.

Ans 5. Two uses of artificial satellites:

• For transmission of radio and TV signals.

• For weather forecasting and remote sensing.
