Class 10 Science Chapter 12 (formerly Chapter 13), Magnetic Effects of Electric Current, connects electricity and magnetism starting from Hans Christian Oersted’s discovery, mapping magnetic field lines around bar magnets, straight conductors, circular loops and solenoids, applying the Right-Hand Thumb Rule and Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule, and explaining domestic AC circuits and safety fuses.
What Class 10 Science Chapter 12 Covers
12.1 & 12.2 Magnetic Field, Field Lines & Field Due to a Current-Carrying Conductor defines magnetic field lines (emerging from the north pole and merging at the south pole outside a magnet, never intersecting each other), applies the Right-Hand Thumb Rule to find the concentric magnetic field direction around a straight current-carrying conductor, and shows how a current-carrying circular loop and solenoid produce a uniform magnetic field inside the solenoid capable of forming an electromagnet.
12.3 Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor in a Magnetic Field demonstrates that a conductor carrying current $I$ placed perpendicular to a magnetic field $B$ experiences a mechanical force whose direction is given by Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule (Forefinger = Field, Second/Middle finger = Current, Thumb = Motion/Force).
12.4 Domestic Electric Circuits explains the live wire (red insulation), neutral wire (black insulation) at $220\text{ V}$ and $50\text{ Hz}$ in India, earth wire (green insulation) protecting metallic-bodied appliances, separate $15\text{ A}$ and $5\text{ A}$ parallel circuits, overloading, short-circuiting, and how an electric fuse prevents damage.
Exercises in Chapter 12
- In-text Questions ask why a compass needle gets deflected when brought near a bar magnet, why two magnetic field lines never intersect each other, and how a solenoid behaves like a magnet.
- Chapter Exercises (9 Questions) test the Right-Hand Thumb Rule, Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule for electrons/alpha particles entering a magnetic field, short-circuit causes, and the function of an earth wire.

FAQ
Why don’t two magnetic field lines intersect each other?
If two magnetic field lines intersected at a point, a compass needle placed at that point of intersection would have to point in two different directions simultaneously, which is physically impossible.
What is the function of an earth wire in domestic circuits?
The earth wire (green insulation) is connected to a metal plate deep in the earth and to the metallic body of appliances like electric irons, toasters and refrigerators. It provides a low-resistance conducting path for any leakage current, keeping the appliance body at earth potential and protecting the user from a severe electric shock.
