NCERT Class 3 EVS Our Wondrous World Chapter 11 Making Things PDF (2026-27)

Making Things visits Mini’s family in a seaside town where her grandfather (Appooppan) kneads clay and spins pots on a potter’s wheel while her mother (Ammu) bakes them in a hot kiln and paints patterns inspired by nature. Students also learn how clay bricks are moulded, baked and laid in interlocking patterns to build strong walls and houses, and why safety gear like helmets and boots protect construction workers.

FAQ

What is a kiln and why are clay pots baked in it?
A kiln is a potter’s hot oven. Baking dried clay pots in a kiln makes them hard, strong and able to hold water without dissolving.

Why are bricks laid in an overlapping pattern instead of straight columns?
Overlapping bricks bind the rows together so the wall does not crack or topple easily when pushed.
