The Value of a digit in a number depends on its place in that number. It is called its place value. Place value, in maths, describes the position of a digit in a number. Each digit has some value in the number, depending upon its position.

## What is Place Value?

Place value is the value of each digit in a number. For example, 3 in 9837represents 3 tens, or 30. However, 9 in 9837 represents 9 thousand or 9,000.

Example: Write down the place value of each digit in the number 908.

The correct place value of each digit in the number can be given as:

• 9 × 100 = 900 or 9 hundreds
• 0× 10 = 0 or 0 tens
• 8× 1 = 8 or 8 ones
