Class 9 English Kaveri Chapter 6, Twin Melodies, is a play about four friends who make music together, followed by the poems A Friend Found in Music and Walter de la Mare’s Music.
What Is in Class 9 English Kaveri Chapter 6
Twin Melodies opens in Iqbal’s room, with posters of the flautists Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shashank Subramanyam on the wall, as Iqbal (flute), Avinash (tabla), Peter (keyboard) and Shruti (violin) end a rehearsal. Shruti looks distressed, and Iqbal brings up what a newspaper wrote about her performance with her father the day before.
A Friend Found in Music describes music as an ocean, a rhythm and a therapy for low moods.
Music by Walter de la Mare, whose lines begin ‘When music sounds, gone is the earth I know’, closes the unit.
The characters: the play centres on Shruti Sharma, a young violinist, and her father Guru Nabin Sharma, a violinist and principal of Sangeetika Music School, who does not know she has joined a fusion group with Avinash on tabla and Iqbal on flute. Posters of the flautists Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shashank Subramanyam hang on the wall, and the play recalls how the violin was carefully brought into Indian classical music. Students then write their own script, using a colon after each speaker’s name.
