Story Summary: The Lesson in Thrift

Money represents the sweat, time, and hard labour of our parents. Learning the habit of thrift early in childhood prevents financial distress in adult life. The proverb reminds us: “A penny saved is a penny earned.”

The Story of Rajan and His Father:

Rajan was an only son, lovingly pampered by his parents who fulfilled his every whim. As he grew up, he turned into a reckless spendthrift, squandering his father’s hard-earned wealth. One day, his father told him that while the family property would eventually be his, Rajan must first prove he could earn money independently. Rajan accepted the challenge, searched tirelessly, found a job, and worked diligently for a month. When he proudly handed his first monthly salary to his father, the father without a word walked out and threw the entire money down the steep hill. Rajan was shocked. The next month, when Rajan brought his second salary, his father did the exact same thing. Furious, Rajan cried out: “I work so hard day and night to earn this money, and you just throw it away!” Smiling gently, the father replied: “Now you realize how painful it was for me when you carelessly threw away my hard-earned money.” Rajan felt deep remorse, apologized, and never wasted money again.

Thought of the Day: “No boy will ever succeed as a man who does not in his youth begin to save.”
