  • *Arithmetic Progression

A sequence of numbers in which each term except the first is obtained by adding a fixed number d to the preceding term.

  • *Standard Form: a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, …
  • First term = a, Common difference = d
  • *nth term of an AP

an = a + (n – 1)d

where a = first term, d = common difference, n = number of terms.

If an AP has m terms, then am or l represents the last term.

  • *Arithmetic Mean

The Arithmetic Mean A between two numbers a and b is given by:

A = (a + b)/(2)

  • Inserting n terms between a and b: If A1, A2, …, An are inserted between a and b, then the common difference is d = (b – a)/(n + 1).
  • *Sum of first n terms of an AP

Sn = n/2[2a + (n – 1)d]

When first term a and last term l are given:

Sn = n/2(a + l)

  • *Relation between an and Sn

an = Sn – Sn-1

Q1

Choose the correct option and give reasons

📝 Question:

Choose the correct option and give reasons

💡 Solution:

(i) First term and common difference of given arithmetic progression are: 3/2, 1/2, -1/2, -3/2, …**

  • (ii) If first term is -2 and common difference is -2 for an arithmetic progression, then fourth term is:
  • (iii) 15th term in the arithmetic progression 7, 13, 19, … is:
  • (iv) First term is 4 and common difference is -4 of an arithmetic progression, then nth term is:
  • (v) 78 is which term of arithmetic progression 3, 8, 13, 18, …?

Q2

Which is an arithmetic progression from the following…

📝 Question:

. Which is an arithmetic progression from the following progressions, give reasons:**

💡 Solution:

  • (a) a, a2, a3, a4, …

a2 – a1 = a2 – a; a3 – a2 = a3 – a2. Since a2 – a1 ≠ a3 – a2, it is not an AP.

  • (b) √2, √8, √18, √32, …

Simplifying terms: √2, 2√2, 3√2, 4√2, …

a2 – a1 = 2√2 – √2 = √2; a3 – a2 = 3√2 – 2√2 = √2.

Since the common difference d = √2 is constant, it is an AP.

  • (c) 12, 32, 52, 72, 92, …

Terms are 1, 9, 25, 49, 81, ….

a2 – a1 = 9 – 1 = 8; a3 – a2 = 25 – 9 = 16. Differences are not equal, so it is not an AP.

  • (d) 0, -4, -8, -12, …

a2 – a1 = -4 – 0 = -4; a3 – a2 = -8 – (-4) = -4.

Common difference d = -4 is constant, so it is an AP.

  • (e) 16, 181/2, 201/2, 23, …

a2 – a1 = 18.5 – 16 = 2.5; a3 – a2 = 20.5 – 18.5 = 2.0.

Differences are not equal (2.5 ≠ 2.0), so it is not an AP.

. If in an arithmetic progression pth term is 1/q and qth term is 1/p, then prove that (pq)th term of arithmetic progression is 1.**

💡 Solution:

1 )*

  • Proof /

a + (p – 1)d = 1/q — (1), a + (q – 1)d = 1/p — (2)

Subtracting (2) from (1): (p – q)d = (p – q)/(pq) ⇒ d = 1/pq

Substitute d: a = 1/pq

apq = a + (pq – 1)d = 1/pq + (pq – 1)1/pq = 1

. If pth term is q and qth term is p of an arithmetic progression, then prove that (p+q)th term is zero.**

💡 Solution:

  • Proof /

a + (p – 1)d = q — (1), a + (q – 1)d = p — (2)

Subtracting (2) from (1): (p – q)d = -(p – q) ⇒ d = -1

From (1): a = p + q – 1

ap+q = a + (p + q – 1)d = (p + q – 1) + (p + q – 1)(-1) = 0

5505**

  • (iv) 1/15, 1/12, 1/10, … up to 11 terms:

a = 1/15, d = 1/12 – 1/15 = 1/60, n = 11

S11 = 11/2[2/15 + 10/60] = 11/2 × 9/30 = 33/20

33/20**

  • (v) n2 + 1, n2 – 1, n2 – 3, … up to 20 terms:
