(i) Why is Salim Ali called the Bird-man of India?**
Salim Ali is called the ‘Bird-man of India’ because he introduced the world of birds to us through his enormous contributions, extensive travel across natural habitats, and lifelong dedication to ornithology in India.
(ii) What do ‘feathers’ of birds tell us?
Observing the feathers of a bird gives us an idea about the life that they lead, as well as their identity, habitat, and adaptations.
(iii) “Looking at the beak of a bird, it is possible to understand its life cycle”. Explain.
A bird’s beak indicates its feeding habits and food type (such as insects, food grains, or flesh). By understanding what and how a bird eats, we can understand its lifestyle, survival mechanism, and place in the ecological life cycle.
(iv) What influenced Salim Ali to become an ornithologist?
As a child, Salim Ali shot a sparrow with a yellow streak on its neck. His uncle took him to Dr. W.S. Millard at BNHS, who identified it as a yellow-throated sparrow and showed him a splendid collection of stuffed birds. This single incident changed his life and influenced him to become an ornithologist.
