E. Answer the following questions:
1. How has mechanisation brought a change in agriculture sector?
Ans 1. We can see many changes in the agricultural sector with its mechanisation. Several machines began to be used as a result of which many farm labourers lost their source of income. But at the same time agricultural activities like sowing, harvesting, spraying insecticides and pesticides became fast_ Also, machines and electricity in villages created some new occupations like tube well diggers, tractor drivers, salesmen, mechanics, etc.
2. Define White Revolution. How did it bring changes in dairy farming?
Ans 2. White Revolution was a successful experiment to increase milk production in both the lurid and urban areas of India. It was started by DE Verghese Kurien. In earlier times the quality of animals and their feed were not very good. As a result, the production of milk was low which created scarcity of milk in the country. Dr. Kurien ended this problem by starting an operation flood. It was related to milk production, processing, marketing, export and distribution of by-products of milk like butter, cheese, ghee, ice cream, yoghurt, etc. The cooperatives worked efficiently and soon India became the largest producer of milk in the world. Dr. Kurien created a national milk grid that linked all milk producers with consumers in over 700 towns and cities. It reduced seasonal and regional price variations.
3. Explain changing trends in occupation in the present times with examples.

(ii) The demand for professionals like scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers, architects, etc. has increased manifolds.
(iii) The demand for non-professionals like tailors, carpenters, plumbers, porters, washermen has also increased.
(iv) Women have started coming in various occupations. We have now women engineers, doctors, teachers, architects, scientists, consultants and pilots in cities.
(v) In rural areas women are working in spice, matchbox and agarbatti factories. They have also talk up jobs as health workers, teachers and in panchayats.
4. What is Dignity of labour? Give an example.
Ans 4. When we talk of ‘Dignity of Labour’, we mean respect for all types of labour. We should not feel that one job is superior to the other. All types of works/ jobs are necessary in a society. So, we must respect all of them. It is absolutely wrong to consider any work as good or bad. The work itself is a dignity. Example: The food i.e. fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc. that we eat are the result of the hard work of the farmers. How can we call their work inferior? Their work is as respectable as the work of a scientist or a doctor.
5. Define Gender Discrimination. In what ways do the women suffer due to gender discrimination?
Ans 5. The practice of treating somebody or a particular group in society less fairly than others because of somebody’s sex. In our society girls and women are discriminated against. They are not given equal opportunities in education, careers, and the political system.
Women suffer due to gender discrimination in the following ways:
(i) When the rural men started migrating to cities in search of occupations, the women took over the responsibility of farming and related activities. But their work is not respected and they are not given the same wages that are given to men.
(ii) Though women form 50 per cent of the Indian population, yet they do not get an equal share in occupations, education, health facilities or parliament.
